Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has become the latest victim of the euro debt crisis. He was forced to resign Saturday, after a week that saw him lose his majority in parliament. A large crowd had already gathered outside Rome’s presidential palace when Mr. Berlusconi’s motorcade arrived. He was given a hostile reception. The crowd shouted insults - calling him a buffoon and a Mafioso - and demanded his resignation. They didn’t have long to wait. Mr Berlusconi’s meeting with President Napolitano lasted just over an hour. News spread fast across Italy of the Prime Minister’s resignation. The party began. Champagne corks were popped; people broke into dance; the square became a sea of Italian flags. One man echoed many in the crowd - saying we are free, we are finally free. Many others made fun of the allegations that Mr Berlusconi held so-called ‘bunga bunga’ parties with underage girls. Former European Commissioner Mario Monti looks set to gain the president’s approval as a new technocrat prime minister. His responsibility will be to stabilise the economy so elections can be held, likely early next year. Local media say Berlusconi had met Monti for a 2-hour lunch and agreed to back him as Italy’s new leader. Rome buzzed with the news that Mr Berlusconi had just hours left in office. Resident Sandro Falbo was among the crowd outside parliament. “I’m so happy because if seems as though Italy has lost its moral sense in recent years,” he said. “Italy’s completely divided and we don’t trust each other. I hope people rediscover the sense of society, to trust each other again.” Italy is under pressure from European partners to name a new leader before markets open on Monday. Political analyst Claudio Borghi says Mario Monti would have international approval. “He is very prepared, very fit for the role. He knows very well the euro economics because he served two terms as European Commissioner. The thing that people here in Italy won’t like is that he’s not elected," he said. That may prove key for the future of a Monti-led government as it tries to implement a 60-billion euro austerity package. In the space of four days, Europe’s debt crisis has forced the leaders of Greece and now Italy from power. Yet many analysts say it’s not certain whether such upheaval will be enough to save the euro currency.

An asteroid the size of an aircraft carrier has flown by Earth in the closest encounter by a massive space rock in more than 30 years. The asteroid, named 2005 YU55, came within about 325,000 kilometers of the planet Tuesday evening (at 2328 UTC). The U.S. space agency, NASA, said there was no chance that the spherical rock would collide with Earth or the moon. The asteroid was traveling at more than 46,670 kilometers per hour. It passed closer to Earth than the moon. The last time an object the size of the asteroid traveled so near to Earth was in 1976. Scientists say it will be 2028 before another space object this large will fly by the planet. A scientist at the University of Arizona discovered the YU55 asteroid in 2005. NASA scientists planned to bounce radio waves off the asteroid and analyze the radar echoes. Those images should reveal details about the rock's surface features. YU55 is about 400 meters in diameter. Scientists believe it has been passing by Earth for thousands of years. It is one of about 8,500 near-Earth objects that NASA has catalogued. Some information for this report was provided by AP and AFP.

An asteroid the size of a tour bus will fly past Earth today (June 27) so closely it will be beneath some of the planet's satellites. The rock, named asteroid 2011 MD will zoom by just 7,500 miles (12,000 km) above the planet, making a sharp turn forced by Earth's gravity before winging off into space again. The flyby will occur at about 1 p.m. EDT (1700 GMT). There is no risk of an impact, NASA scientists said. The space rock, estimated to be between 29 to 98 feet (9 to 30 meters) wide, is likely too small to survive a plunge through our atmosphere anyway. An asteroid this size, if it were mostly stony, would break apart and burn up before hitting the surface. Iron-heavy space rocks are better at surviving the fiery entry, however. Either way, calculations show that asteroid 2011 MD will make a dogleg shift in its trajectory and scoot on by. "There is no chance that 2011 MD will hit Earth but scientists will use the close pass as opportunity to study it w/ radar observations," astronomers with NASA's Asteroid Watch program at JPL said. [ Photos: Asteroids in Deep Space ] At closest approach, the asteroid will be above the coast of Antarctica. It will be well below geosynchronous satellites, which orbit 22,236 miles (35,786km) above Earth. Experts say there is little chance the rock will hit a satellite, simply because of the vast expanse and relatively small number of satellites. The asteroid will remain well above the orbit of the International Space Station, which flies about 220 miles (354 km) above Earth. Objects the size of 2011 MD usually make close Earth passes like today's event every six years or so, NASA estimates. However, not all of them are discovered. This rock was discovered June 22. The closest recorded space rock pass was made by asteroid 2011 CQ1 , which came within 3,400 miles (5,471 kilometers) of Earth on Feb. 4 of this year. Asteroid 2011 MD will be likely visible in medium-sized telescopes by experienced observers who are able to find and track a moving object. Even NASA doesn't expect to see much, however. "We won't likely be releasing photos of the object since they would only be points of light," Don Yeomans, of NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, told SPACE.com. "Radar astronomers will attempt observations but 2011 MD is so small that even if successful, there are not likely to be any noteworthy images released."
