LONDON (AFP) – Thousands of women took part in a so-called "Slut Walk" in London, insisting that they should be able to wear as much or as little as they like without facing sexual harassment by men. The colourful march on Saturday saw most people wearing everyday clothing but some wore provocative outfits as they marched on London's central Trafalgar Square. Slut Walk was first held in Toronto earlier this year after a police officer caused outrage by stating that "women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimised" during a speech to university students. The protest soon spread to cities around the world where women joined in huge numbers to challenge the mindset that victims of sexual assault should bear a degree of responsibility on the grounds that they were "asking for it", including Nicaragua where dozens of women took part in a Slut Walking protest on Saturday. More Slut Walks are planned in Australia, Argentina, the Netherlands and India, where skimpily dressed women will take to the streets of New Delhi on June 25. A government-backed UN survey last year said about 85 percent of Delhi's women are perpetually scared of being sexually harassed. The London march kicked off behind a banner reading "Slut Walk London: because we've had enough". Others carried placards reading "It's a dress, not a yes"; "Women against rape"; "No means no" and "Hijabs, hoodies, hotpants, our bodies, our choices". One sign read "We are all chambermaids" -- a reference to the Dominique Strauss-Kahn sex case. The former International Monetary Fund chief has pleaded not guilty to seven counts of sex crimes, including attempted rape, against a 32-year-old woman cleaning his New York hotel suite. "It's not the victim's fault if they're raped. Some men think they own the right to women's bodies," 25-year-old student Sofia Capel told AFP. Casually dressed in a t-shirt and jeans, Rachel Sullivan, 35, who works with adults with learning difficulties, said: "I reserve the right to dress as I like. "It's unusual for us in England to demonstrate like this, but this is too much, what this policeman said." A man and a woman, walking arm in arm, both wore bras and had the word "slut" written across the midriff. Student Liz Kedde, 27, wore a see-through top over her bra. "I think it's important that women are not seen as disposable," she said, adding: "I never dress like this in the daytime, of course." Several men joined the protest, among them Andy Fell, a 27-year-old sound engineer. "I came to show my solidarity with my girlfriend, and with the issue as well," he said. Follow Yahoo!
NEW YORK – For some airline passengers who were finally able to make it into a New York City airport after a blizzard shut the region down, the travel nightmare started once they landed. Passengers on two Cathay Pacific flights and a British Airways flight spent hours on the tarmac at John F. Kennedy International Airport after landing because there were no gates available for them. One Cathay Pacific flight that originated in Hong Kong and was diverted to Toronto before landing in New York sat for more than 10 hours before passengers were allowed to walk off Tuesday morning. The weary travelers said they were given meager snacks like juice, water, cookies or instant soups, and got conflicting reports about why they could not leave. Explanations ranged from the airport not having enough staff to accommodate landings, Customs not being fully operational and a lack of gate space. "It was so frustrating, just sitting there for hours, waiting for more bad news," said 24-year-old Gigi Godfrey of Belize City, Belize. She was in transit through New York after spending Christmas in Thailand, and couldn't remember what day she had first boarded a plane. "I am so tired I don't even know what day yesterday is," she said. Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport, said airlines were dispatching planes to the airport without coordinating gate space first. "They did not call or work with the terminal operator at terminal 7, which is where they typically dock," he said in reference to a second stranded Cathay flight. "So without gate space for them, they have nowhere to go." The second Cathay Pacific flight — which also originated in Hong Kong and made a stop in Vancouver, British Columbia — sat for about 8 hours after landing at JFK Tuesday. Coleman said the Port Authority worked to find somewhere for the plane to go. "Our staff out there have been working nonstop for the last several hours to try to find gate space for them even though it has nothing to do with our responsibility as the airport operator; it's the airline's responsibility." For passenger Abi Subramanian, an investment banker returning home to New York City from a holiday trip in Vancouver, the wait was especially torturous because he was traveling with his 2 1/2-month-old daughter. "She's been very patient but she's not feeling well," he told The Associated Press about eight hours into the delay and shortly before they were finally able to get off the plane. "I've been through this before in New York City," he said, referring to big snowstorms. "There's never been anything like this." Kenneth Choi of Vancouver said he thought the ordeal would be over once they entered the airport. Instead, they faced huge lines in customs and crammed onto an overloaded shuttle buses to get to another terminal and fill out lost luggage forms. "I don't understand why it takes 9 or 10 hours to figure things out," Choi said. "It's like living in the Stone Age again." Cathay Pacific spokesman Gus Whitcomb said the planes had taken off under the assumption that they would have somewhere to go upon landing. "We dispatched the planes expecting we would have gates. That was not the case," he said. Planes that were expected to depart and clear room for incoming flights were still taking up space, Whitcomb said. He apologized to Cathay's passengers, calling it "one of those situations where the best of intentions didn't go the way we would have liked." Whitcomb said the airline will try to figure out a tangible way of making it up to passengers. About 300 passengers on a British Airways flight from London spent more than seven hours overnight at Kennedy. British Airways spokesman John Lampl said Flight 183 landed Monday night but waited until about 4:30 a.m. for an open gate. By that time, Lampl said, Customs officials had gone home for the night, and passengers had to remain on the plane until more Customs workers showed up at 6 a.m. Follow Yahoo!
TORONTO (Reuters) – Toronto-Dominion Bank is buying Chrysler Financial for $6.3 billion, the second time in a week that a Canadian lender has placed a big bet on the U.S. economic recovery. Tuesday's cash deal, which includes about $400 million in goodwill, will make Canada's No. 2 bank one of North America's biggest bank-owned auto lenders. The bank won't issue any stock to fund its purchase from Cerberus Capital Management, a feature that helped push TD shares up nearly 4 percent. "The TD Bank acquisition of Chrysler Financial is an example of what can happen when foreign banks are financially strong, flush with cash, and want to expand into the lucrative U.S. market," said Mark Williams, a risk-management expert at the Boston University School of Management. "U.S. retail banks, such as Bank of America, have plenty to fear. The Canadian bankers are upon us." This deal follows Friday's $4.1 billion purchase of Wisconsin-based Marshall & Ilsley Corp by Canada's No. 4 lender Bank of Montreal, although BMO irked the market by issuing $800 million in stock to fund its deal. BETTING ON CARS The TD deal reflects a growing belief that car sales will help fuel the U.S. economy as the auto sector recovers from its 2008-2009 meltdown. The acquisition also illustrates the strength of Canada's banks, which emerged from the crisis in much better shape than their U.S. counterparts. With limited growth prospects at home, some are looking to the United States to deploy their capital. "I think you'll see a blending of the Canadian and U.S. banking systems over the next few years. The Canadian banks can't expand in Canada anymore," said Richard Bove, bank analyst at Rochdale Securities. Chrysler Financial was the automaker's lending arm, although last year's U.S. government-sponsored restructuring of Chrysler and General Motors reined in its operations. Cerberus will retain about $1 billion in Chrysler Financial assets, according to a source close to the private equity fund. The source said that means Cerberus is close to breaking even on the Chrysler transaction as a whole, which would make it the only investor involved in the U.S. auto bailouts that didn't take a loss. TD said the auto financing business will complement its U.S. East Coast retail banking network, helping to jump-start loan growth as a fragile recovery gains traction. Jefferson Harralson, an analyst at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods, said he expects banks to get more involved in auto lending. "In previous recessions, you worried about credit cards and auto loans, not the mortgages. This time that's been reversed." U.S. auto sales dropped to a 27-year low of 10.4 million vehicles in 2009, but are expected to rebound to nearly 11.5 million this year in a recovery that could run beyond 2012. TD officials said they expect auto lending to grow to $900 billion over the next three years, from $700 billion now. TD said the Chrysler Financial purchase should not affect 2011 earnings and will add about $100 million to adjusted 2012 earnings. It may help it exceed its goal of $1.6 billion annual earnings from its U.S. unit in three years. TD first entered the U.S. market in 2005. It now has a network of about 1,300 branches and it owns about 46 percent of online broker TD Ameritrade. BIGGER LOAN BOOK TD already has an auto loan book of C$10.4 billion in Canada and $3.3 billion in the United States. It aims to book $1 billion a month in new loans by 2013. It will compete against Chase, Wells Fargo, Capital One, Bank of America and Fifth Third Bank, as well as other major U.S. banks. Chrysler Financial has $7.5 billion in loans and leases outstanding, as well as a U.S. platform with about 2,000 dealer relationships that will establish TD's national loan presence. "Because we generate so many more deposits than we generate loans (at the U.S. branch bank), we've always said if we could find the right asset generating franchise, we would buy it," TD CEO Ed Clark said in an interview. Chrysler Financial CEO Tom Gilman is staying on with the company and will run the bank's auto business out of Toronto In 2007, Cerberus bought Chrysler for $7.4 billion from Daimler AG in a deal financed by a host of Wall Street's marquee investment banks including J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. The automaker owns the Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler brands. Surging oil prices and a slump in sales in 2008 hobbled Chrysler, which relied on trucks and sport utility vehicles for the majority of its sales. Chrysler's automotive arm filed for bankruptcy funded by the U.S. government and is now managed by Fiat SpA. Cerberus maintained a controlling stake in Chrysler Financial, a separate entity that was not involved in the bankruptcy. Some of the financing company's operations were taken over by Ally Financial Inc, the auto and mortgage lender formerly known as GMAC. TD's Toronto-listed stock rose C$2.64 to close at C$73.16.
NEW YORK – Amare Stoudemire arrived in July and announced the New York Knicks were back, vowing things would be different for the longtime losers. "This was the plan," he said. "The plan was to have success." Right now, nobody can stop him from backing up his boast. Stoudemire scored 34 points to lead the surging Knicks to their fifth straight victory, 121-114 over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night. Wilson Chandler added 21 points and Raymond Felton had 18 points and 11 assists for the Knicks, who won for the 10th time in 11 games and improved to 13-9, the first time they've been four games over .500 since finishing the 2000-01 season with a 48-34 record. The key has been Stoudemire, who has surpassed 30 in every game during the winning streak, the first Knicks player with five straight 30-point games since Stephon Marbury from Feb. 4-11, 2005. "I don't know if you can play any better than he has the last couple of weeks," said Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni, who also coached Stoudemire in Phoenix and said the All-Star is capable of extending his roll "close to 82 games." "His power, strength, now his outside shooting, his choices that he's making, just seems like it's easy," D'Antoni added. Kevin Love had 33 points and 15 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who duplicated the sizzling start they had in a victory over Cleveland on Saturday but didn't have the defense to make it stand up. Michael Beasley, who missed that victory with a sprained ankle, returned and scored 25. Coming off his second player of the week award of the season, Stoudemire shot 15 of 23 from the field, reaching the 30-point plateau with one of his powerful dunks that stretched the lead to 105-96 with 4:18 remaining. He scored 12 in the fourth quarter, but the Knicks didn't put it away until Danilo Gallinari's 3-pointer made it 114-107 with 49 seconds to play. Following a 3-8 start that seemed to indicate another long winter in New York, the Knicks have won five in a row for the second time this season. They will try for their first six-game winning streak since January 2006 when they host Toronto on Wednesday. Luke Ridnour scored 16 for the Timberwolves, who got off to sensational start but fell apart in the second half. Already dealing with a number of injuries, they were hurt by the loss of former Knicks center Darko Milicic, who scored 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting in eight minutes before leaving with an injured right quadriceps. "This was a competitive game throughout," Love said. "It was fun to play in. It just wasn't fun when the final buzzer went off." Love had 31 points and 31 rebounds when the Wolves beat the Knicks on Nov. 12 in Minneapolis, the first 30-30 game in the NBA since Moses Malone in 1982. He hit his first seven shots Monday, but struggled after that and was overpowered when forced to play Stoudemire after Milicic's departure. Trailing by seven in the third quarter, the Knicks came up with five steals during a 12-0 burst that gave them an 82-77 lead on Felton's layup with 5:16 left in the period. After surrendering 68 points in the first half, the Knicks limited the Wolves to 18 on 6-for-17 shooting in the third, surging to a 92-86 lead entering the fourth. "When we pick up the tempo on our defense, that's when we're really a good team," Felton said. "So we've got to keep it going, just got to continue to get better, not be complacent and try to keep this thing rolling." Minnesota cut it to four a few times early in the final period, but Stoudemire answered each time with a bucket. He was averaging 29 during the previous 10 games, giving the Knicks everything they could have hoped since signing him from Phoenix this summer. "They just had it going," Beasley said. "They're the hottest team in the league right now. Amare Stoudemire is the hottest player. When it counted, we couldn't stop them." The Wolves made their first nine shots, and when they finally missed, Milicic grabbed the rebound and fed Love inside for an easy hoop. They hit 14 of 15 to start the game and 16 of 21 (76 percent) in the opening quarter, but led only 36-32 because the Knicks made 65 percent. The Knicks grabbed the lead early in the second but couldn't contain Love, who set a franchise record with his eighth consecutive successful 3-point attempt. His free throws gave Minnesota an 11-point advantage with 3:06 left, and the Wolves led 68-61 at halftime. NOTES: The Wolves said an MRI confirmed that F Anthony Tolliver has a sprained right MCL and he would miss six to eight weeks. Tolliver wrote on his Twitter page that he'd be back sooner. ... Stoudemire is the first Knicks player with multiple player of the week wins in the same season since Patrick Ewing won three times in 1992-93. Follow Yahoo!
Sarah's Key -- Film Review By Kirk Honeycutt, September 18, 2010 07:30 ET "Sarah's Key" Bottom Line: A heartbreaking, wonderfully acted and superbly dramatized drama. TORONTO -- Moving gracefully across the decades and people's hidden histories, Gilles Paquet-Brenner's "Sarah's Key" ("Elle s'appelait Sarah") relates a highly emotional yet unsentimental story about a Paris-based journalist digging into a Holocaust story that she discovers has a connection to her own family. The movie gathers momentum with a steady, assured pace, accumulating incidents, characters, secrets and lies until the rush of events is absolutely transfixing. Cinema can sometimes rival the novel in compulsive intensity and "Sarah's Key" is one such example. Indeed the movie is based on a best-selling novel by journalist Tatiana de Rosney, which the director and Serge Joncour have beautifully adapted to the screen. As a kind of detective story delving into the darkest pages of 20th century French history, the film should enjoy considerable success throughout Europe. The film's smash Toronto debut certainly justifies the Weinstein Co.'s acquisition of the film last week. The story gets told in two time frames. In present day, the remarkable Kristin Scott Thomas plays American-born journalist Julia Jarmond, who is working on a magazine story about the 1942 Paris roundups and deportations of thousands of Jewish families. An equally remarkable 10-year-old actress, Melusine Mayance, plays Sarah, whose family was among those deported to the camps. Julia's husband, Bertrand Tezac (Frederic Pierrot), a brusque and somewhat arrogant businessman, is renovating his family's Marais-district flat as a new home for himself, his wife and their 11-year-old daughter. In her research, Julia discovers that Bertrand's family first took over the apartment when its Jewish occupants were dispossessed in that roundup. In the parallel story, little Sarah hides her 4-year-old brother Thomas in a bedroom closet when the French police arrive. She promises to return but instead finds herself first with her parents in the atrocious Velodrome d'Hiver detention facility in Paris, then transported to a countryside camp. Desperate to rescue her brother, she manages to escape. Back and forth the movie swings between the two time periods. Julia searches with increasing determination for scrap of information that will tell her what happened to Sarah and her family. Her surprising discoveries throw a new light on her current situation as a wife and mother forced to make crucial decisions about her future. In uncovering the truths about the Tezac family, Julia uncovers ugly truths about her adopted country. But "Sarah's Key" puts human faces to tragedies that risk becoming abstractions when reduced to numbers of dead. And the faces in this movie are remarkable. The most important one, of course, belongs to young Mayance. From innocence to terror and then sheer desperation, the youngster conveys all this with heartbreaking conviction. In her journey she encounters a gruff farmer (that superb veteran actor Niels Arestrup), who most reluctantly comes to her aid. There are others too from a French policeman who shows kindness to a young girl who escapes with Sarah. In Julia's story, Scott Thomas puts her character in a road to discovery in an absorbing performance. No scene, not even a moment, gets overplayed for all the natural melodrama. If young Sarah represents the film's heartbreak, then Scott Thomas' Julia represents the film's conviction that the truth must always come first. In the contemporary sequences, Michel Duchaussoy nicely underplays her father-in-law, who is forced into a confession. As for others, to relate whom they play may be plot spoilers but Aidan Quinn, George Birt and Charlotte Poutrel all have memorable roles. Perhaps the movie closest to this is "Sophie's Choice," where the ghosts of the Holocaust maintain haunt survivors long after the war and a woman must come to terms with unimaginable guilt. This is a poignant tale of two females confronted by the madness of history. The production is superb with Francoise Dupertuis' production design and Eric Perron's costumes always convincing in both eras while Herve Schneid's editing makes the many transitions smooth as silk.
