SYDNEY (AFP) – Veteran US comedian Jerry Lewis has had to cancel a sell-out Sydney tour after collapsing from exhaustion as he prepared to take the stage, promoters said Saturday. The 85-year-old was due to perform before a packed house in western Sydney Friday night to raise money for muscular dystrophy but the event was called off at the last minute after he fell ill. Lewis has cancelled the remainder of his Sydney tour to rest and will return to the stage on Thursday for a Melbourne performance if his health permits. "He is extremely disappointed for his fans that he was unable to perform last night, but a combination of a long flight from the US and a busy few days on the start of his national tour led to his exhaustion," said David Jack, head of Australia's Muscular Dystrophy Foundation. A doctor had attended to the comedy star but he had not been hospitalised and was "feeling much better" after resting in his hotel overnight, added Jack. "He wanted me to give a very important message just to quash any rumours: `I'm not pregnant'," he joked. "Understandably, Jerry's health is our primary concern throughout this period and we want to ensure he's able to travel home healthy." Many people in the 700-strong audience for Friday's event had elected to donate the cost of their ticket rather than seek a refund and Jack said he had been "overwhelmed" when they rose to give the absent star a standing ovation. Staff at the club where Lewis had been due to perform said the comedy legend had been unable to get out of the car when he arrived Friday and looked "extremely unwell". "On meeting Mr Lewis he was very pale, looked quite frail and was unable to communicate very well," the club's general manager, Ian Lowe, told ABC Radio. Lewis had been scheduled to do a dinner engagement on Saturday night and another event on Sunday, both of which were called off. Known for his legendary 1940s comedy partnership with Dean Martin, Lewis has also achieved success as a film producer, screenwriter, director and singer and was awarded a humanitarian Oscar in 2009. Poor health saw him hospitalised in Australia once before, in 1999, when he fell ill with viral meningitis. A diabetic, Lewis has also undergone heart surgery following a number of heart attacks and battled prostate cancer and lung problems. Follow Yahoo!
RIYADH (AFP) – Defiant Saudi women got behind the wheels of their cars Friday in response to calls for nationwide action to break a traditional ban unique to the ultra-conservative kingdom. The call spread through Facebook and Twitter is the largest en masse action since November 1990, when 47 Saudi women were arrested and severely punished after demonstrating in cars. Forty-two women took part in Friday's protest, according to the Facebook campaign page Women2drive, which said none were arrested, one was given a traffic ticket and that two others were escorted home. A woman said she was stopped by a policeman in Mecca who confiscated her mobile phone and those of her passengers but made no effort to take her to a police station. "We've just returned from the supermarket. My wife decided to start the day by driving to the store and back," columnist Tawfiq Alsaif said on his Twitter page. One of the women, Maha al-Qahtani, tweeted that she drove down one of the capital Riyadh's main arteries. "I took King Fahd Road and then Olaya Street, along with my husband, I decided that the car for today is mine," Qahtani said on Twitter. "This is a right for women that is not banned by any law or religion... I went out to establish this right, so that it would be up to me to drive or not," she told AFP by telephone. Her husband Mohammed al-Qahtani tweeted that she carried some of her personal belongings to be "ready to go to prison without fear." Businesswoman Azza al-Shamassi told AFP she took her six-year-old twins for a drive "to buy them sweets." "I was scared but if all the women started driving I would feel reassured." A handful of women uploaded video footage of themselves driving, while some said they passed police patrols without being stopped, in what could be an attempt by authorities to avoid embarrassment as the campaign attracted global media attention. A woman started the posting with a video of her driving after midnight as the first woman to take up the protest. Veiled, she drove along nearly empty main roads until she parked at a supermarket. "All that we need is to run our errands without depending on drivers," said the unnamed woman in the video. "I believe that the society is ready to welcome us." Police patrols were at normal levels on the sleepy streets of Riyadh on Friday, the first day of the Muslim weekend, an AFP photographer reported. Many Saudi women had pledged on Facebook and Twitter to answer the call to defy the deeply entrenched ban. But instead of staging demonstrations, which are strictly banned in the absolute monarchy, women with driving licences obtained abroad were encouraged to take individual action. Veteran women's rights activist Wajiha al-Huwaidar told AFP she did not expect a huge turnout as hoped for by sympathisers abroad because of the severe response by officials to women who have taken the lead in recent weeks. "I do not expect something big as people abroad imagine," she said, adding that jailing activist Manal al-Sherif and others has scared some women off. Sharif, a 32-year-old computer scientist, found herself behind bars for two weeks last month after driving in the Eastern Province and posting footage of her actions on the Internet. Six other women were also briefly detained after being caught learning to drive on an empty plot of land in north Riyadh. Women in Saudi Arabia face an array of constraints, ranging from having to cover from head to toe in public and needing a male guardian's permission to travel, to having restricted access to jobs because of strict segregation rules. The main Facebook page campaign, dubbed Women2Drive, says the action will keep going "until a royal decree allowing women to drive is issued." "Saudi Arabian authorities must stop treating women as second-class citizens and open the kingdom?s roads to women drivers," Amnesty International said Thursday. There is no law banning women from driving in the oil-rich kingdom, but the interior ministry imposes regulations based on a fatwa, or religious edict, stipulating women should not be permitted to drive. But the society that is constrained by strict Islamic rules on segregation is not all that welcoming despite many supportive statements. A counter Facebook group was created urging men to beat every woman they spot behind the wheel. The last mass protest against the ban was held in November 1990 when a group of women stunned Saudi men by driving around Riyadh in 15 cars before being arrested. The women were provoked at the time by the sight of US female soldiers who were taking part in the first Gulf War driving military vehicles freely in their own country while they are banned.
WASHINGTON – Veteran diplomat Richard Holbrooke, who is a special envoy on the Afghanistan war, was in critical condition after more than 20 hours of surgery to fix a tear in the large artery that moves blood from the heart. President Barack Obama said in a statement that he and first lady Michelle Obama were praying for Holbrooke's recovery. He called Holbrooke, "a towering figure in American foreign policy" who has been a critical player in developing the administration's policy on Afghanistan. The 69-year-old Holbrooke was meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton about midmorning Friday at the State Department when he collapsed. "Many people would have succumbed to that. Richard is fighting through. Anyone who knows him, and I was with him Friday morning before this happened, knows how tough and resilient he is and we're all praying that that quality sees him through now," Obama adviser David Axelrod told CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday. Doctors at George Washington University Hospital worked more than 20 hours through the day Friday and overnight to repair the tear in Holbrooke's aorta. The surgery was completed Saturday morning, said State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley. Holbrooke's family was said to be with him. Clinton and Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have been at the hospital as well, according to the White House. Clinton visited on Friday night and again on Saturday. "Richard Holbrooke is a towering figure in American foreign policy, a critical member of my Afghanistan and Pakistan team, and a tireless public servant who has won the admiration of the American people and people around the world," Obama said in a statement. Hospital officials referred all questions about Holbrooke's condition to the State Department. A torn aorta is a condition in which a rip develops in the inner wall of the aorta allowing blood to enter the vessel wall and weaken it. If not corrected the condition can lead to rapid death. As blood enters the wall it reduces blood flow just as if there were a severely bleeding wound, leading to serious internal bleeding, a loss of blood flow and possible complications in organs affected by the lack of blood, according to medical experts. Even if the surgery has stabilized Holbrooke's condition, recovery is likely to be lengthy. Holbrooke's illness comes just days before the Obama administration is expected to roll out the results of its review of the Afghanistan war next Thursday. His illness is unlikely to result in any changes in that review in which the diplomat has played an integral role. Afghan President Hamid Karzai sent a letter to Holbrooke, saying he was saddened to hear the diplomat had gone through surgery and wished him quick recovery, according to a statement from Karzai's office. "But when I was informed that your health condition was better after the surgery, I was very happy," Karzai said in the letter. Gen. David H. Petraeus, commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, Mark Sedwill, NATO's senior civilian representative and Ashraf Ghani, special adviser to Karzai, said in a joint statement that they "wish him a full and fast recovery." Holbrooke's prolonged absence could have an impact on the administration's ability to implement — and also sell to a skeptical Congress — its push for Afghan forces to assume a greater role in the fighting, allowing U.S. troops to come home. It is a transition in which Holbrooke was expected to play an important part, since he has made many visits to the region and developed personal relationships with leaders in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. The feisty and sometimes abrasive diplomat — whose forceful style earned him nicknames such as "The Bulldozer" or "Raging Bull — is perhaps best known for helping broker the 1995 agreement that ended the war in Bosnia. He served as ambassador to the United Nations during the Clinton administration. He also was ambassador to Germany from 1993 to 1994 and then assistant secretary of state for European affairs. Holbrooke's career with the foreign service dates back to his posting in South Vietnam in 1962 and included time as a member of the U.S. delegation to the Paris Peace Talks on Vietnam. ___ Associated Press writers Matthew Lee and Anne Gearan contributed to this report.
LOS ANGELES – Whether he was a Hollywood hitman or an ex-con with a big mouth still isn't known. One thing is certain about the man who shot himself to death when police converged on him to talk about the killing of Hollywood publicist Ronni Chasen: He was an armed career criminal possibly looking at another stretch in prison, whether he had any connection to Chasen's death or not. Documents obtained Friday by The Associated Press reveal that Harold Martin Smith, who acquaintances say had boasted of killing Chasen for money, was a convicted, two-strikes felon with a long criminal history. Smith, 43, had most recently been released from prison in 2007 after a robbery conviction. He was discharged from parole last year and had told neighbors at the seedy Los Angeles apartment building where he lived that he would never return to prison. He ensured that Wednesday, when Beverly Hills police detectives, armed with a search warrant, approached him in the shabby lobby of the Harvey Apartments, told him to take his hands out of his pockets and said they were there to talk about Chasen's killing. Smith pulled a gun from one of those pockets and shot himself in the head. Police say it's possible Smith had no connection to the murder. "At this time, it is unknown if this individual was involved in the Chasen homicide," Lt. Tony Lee said in a statement to the Los Angeles Times Friday. He referred to Smith, as a "person of interest" rather than a suspect and said undercover officers were following a tip from the Fox program "America's Most Wanted" when they approached him. However, Smith likely knew he was in trouble no matter what he told police, criminal experts say. "Here's Harold talking all this (expletive). Cops are standing there looking at him, he's thinking, I didn't kill Ronni but I'm standing here with a gun in my pocket," speculated private investigator John Nazarian, a former sheriff's deputy who has investigated homicide cases. "He's going to go back to prison, for life probably. So he just decided to check out." A third felony conviction could have brought a life sentence for Smith under California's three-strikes law. Court records show Smith, a transient, was no stranger to Beverly Hills, where Chasen was shot to death on Nov. 20. He was arrested for robberies in that city and neighboring West Hollywood and sentenced to 11 years in prison in 1998. One of the victims testified in court that he grabbed her in a bear hug and demanded her purse but fled with just her portable music player and headphones when she screamed and struggled. His criminal record dates back at least 25 years to 1985, when he was convicted of burglary in New York. He moved to California in 1991, was arrested again for burglary and pleaded guilty. Three years later, he was charged in an Oregon robbery but it could not be immediately determined if he was convicted. He was charged with marijuana possession and loitering last year in Manhattan Beach, Calif., and pleaded guilty to the latter charge. A warrant for his arrest was issued after he failed to return to court in September to pay his $160 fine. Chasen, 64, was shot multiple times as she drove through Beverly Hills in her Mercedes from a party after attending the premiere of the movie "Burlesque." She was promoting the film's soundtrack for an Oscar nomination. As police continued their investigation Friday, a judge approved a petition to appoint special administrators for Chasen's estate, which court records show has an estimated value of $6.1 million. Attorneys for executors named in Chasen's 1994 will were asking the judge to appoint them as administrators so they can run her business and try to determine whether the publicist had a newer will. Martha Smilgis, one of the co-executors, said she did not think Chasen was killed because of anything in her will. A friend of Chasen for more than 30 years, Smilgis said the veteran publicist had not expressed any fear or concern in recent conversations. "Believe me, this woman expected to live on and on," Smilgis said. ___ Associated Press writers Greg Risling and Anthony McCartney contributed to this report. Follow Yahoo!
RENO, Nev. – Veteran state Sen. Bill Raggio, one of Nevada's most influential Republicans over the last four decades, says he's reluctantly endorsing Democratic U.S. Sen. Harry Reid's re-election campaign. Raggio also cited what he called Angle's inability and unwillingness to work with others even within her own party, and her extreme positions on Social Security and other issues. Raggio also criticized Angle for badmouthing GOP leaders in a recent secretly taped conversation. The Angle campaign did not immediately respond to Raggio's comments.
Secretariat -- Film Review By Kirk Honeycutt, October 03, 2010 12:00 ET "Secretariat" Bottom Line: An engaging sports movie about the greatest racehorse ever and his female owner who literally bets the farm on his supremacy. Mayhem Pictures and its producer/partners Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray have successfully hit upon a formula for making inspiring sports movies, and "Secretariat," the story of the world's greatest racehorse, is no exception. Written by Mike Rich, who wrote "The Rookie" and "Miracle" for Mayhem, the film manages to find a way around the seeming disadvantage of making a movie about a horse likely to win every race. Rich and director Randall Wallace do so by focusing not on its eponymous hero but on his female owner. The film thus takes on a feminist tone as a Denver housewife (well-played by Diane Lane) goes up against the old boys who dominate horse racing. Consequently, "Secretariat" might be one sports movie that draws a significant share of female viewers. The film looks primed for a decent theatrical payoff for Disney, especially with older viewers and the "faith-based" audience Disney has courted online. The film should be a solid performer on all TV platforms and home video. In a career spanning only 16 months, Secretariat became a true legend. Altogether, the deep-chested, muscular, chestnut stallion won 16 of his 21 career races, with three seconds and one third, for in-the-money finishes in 20-of-21 starts. So this movie definitely is not about an improbable underdog like "Seabiscuit" was. The thrill here for audiences is akin to going up against criminal baddies with Dirty Harry on your side or entering the boxing ring with Muhammad Ali. If you know anything about horse-race history, you can't wait until you see how the movie stages the famous 1973 Belmont Stakes. The movie seeks its dramatic conflict between races in the battles of the stallion's owner and true believer, Penny Chenery Tweedy (Lane) -- who takes over the Virginia-based Meadow Stables from her ailing dad (Scott Glenn) -- for she inherits a stud farm deeply in debt and, upon her father's death, owes hefty estate taxes. Nonetheless, her unshakable faith in this miracle horse extends even to before his birth. A 1969 coin toss, originally agreed to by her father, determines which of two foals sired by Bold Ruler, one of most important stallions of that day, will go to the winner. Ogden Phipps (James Cromwell), a wealthy breeder and owner, wins the toss and makes his selection. Penny whispers that she actually got her wish: She wants the unborn foal of Somethingroyal. She guessed right. Aligned against Penny and her horse, whom everyone calls Big Red, are a wall of sexist men starting with a corrupt trainer she immediately fires. Then there is Penny's tradition-minded husband (Dylan Walsh), who wants her back home minding the stove and washing machine; her economist brother (Dylan Baker), who wants the horse sold to pay the estate taxes; and a belligerent owner (Nestor Serrano) of Secretariat's only racetrack rival, Sham. Misogynistic remarks and slights fail to deter Penny, who runs roughshod over the male world of racing. And she can because she has the best horse. Her team is nearly all-male as well: Veteran trainer and all-around eccentric Lucien Laurin (John Malkovich, reigning in his usual exuberance only slightly), who gives the movie its needed color by dressing, as one character puts it, "like Superfly"; tough-as-nails jockey Ron Turcotte (excellently played by real-life jockey Otto Thorwarth); and groom Eddie Sweat (Nelsan Ellis), who believes he knows what horses think. Penny's one female assistant is Miss Ham (a motherly Margo Martindale). The film's other prominent speaking roles are barely necessary. As Penny's daughter Kate, Disney recording star AJ Michalka gets a chance to sing and, when Kate turns into something of a hippie, to trivialize the whole counterculture/anti-war movement of that era. Kevin Connolly and Eric Lange play two cartoonish reporters who never venture into the press box. Lane, in a series of wigs to portray the blond Penny Tweedy, holds the film together with a sturdy performance that suggests, in moments, a mystical connection between horse and owner. Malkovich gives the film its comic relief as the French-Canadian trainer who after a long career has a winner to make up for all those painful big losses. The races are well shot, with five horses needed to play the one superhorse in all his glory.
MIAMI (Reuters) – Hurricane Igor strengthened rapidly over the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday, becoming a large and dangerous Category 4 storm as it spun menacingly westward. Igor, capable of causing catastrophic damage, posed no imminent threat to land or energy interests. But the U.S. National Hurricane Center said Igor was packing top sustained winds of 140 miles per hour, making it a "major" Category 4 storm on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricane intensity. "Igor continues to intensify at a rapid pace," the Miami-based hurricane center said. It said the storm was located about 1,065 miles east of the Caribbean's northern Leeward Islands at 5 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT). Some additional strengthening of Igor was expected over the next three days but it was expected to fall short of becoming a Category 5 storm before it begins to weaken gradually on Thursday. Computer models project Igor, which became the fourth hurricane of the 2010 Atlantic season late on Saturday, would stay in the Atlantic for the coming days and not enter the Gulf of Mexico, where U.S. oil and gas operations are clustered. Veteran forecaster Jeff Masters said on Sunday on his Weather Underground blog (www.wunderground.com) that Igor may threaten Bermuda but had only a small chance of making landfall on the U.S. East Coast or in Canada. Masters and other forecasters said it was still too early to make any definitive predictions about Igor's long-term fate, however. Behind Igor, the hurricane center said a tropical depression off the southernmost Cape Verde islands was just below cyclone strength and poised to become Tropical Storm Julia at any time. Julia was expected to become a Category 1 hurricane. The hurricane center was also monitoring a low pressure system over the east-central Caribbean that it said could develop into a tropical cyclone over the next couple of days. The 2010 Atlantic hurricane season was predicted to be extremely active by most forecasters. Besides Igor, three hurricanes -- Alex, Danielle and Earl -- formed earlier in the season, the last two reaching Category 4 strength. Several forecasters have said they expect the season to produce in all some five major hurricanes of Category 3 strength or stronger. (Reporting by Tom Brown; Editing by Anthony Boadle) Follow Yahoo!
Piranha 3D -- Film Review By Michael Rechtshaffen, August 19, 2010 04:04 ET "Piranha 3D" Bottom Line: A bloody entertaining blast of a flesh-eating fish-out-of-water story. During the past few months, we have been bombarded by 3D toys, cats and dogs, green ogres, airbenders and even hip-hop dancers, but conspicuously missing from that multidimensional lineup have been totally naked honeys making out in an underwater ballet. Successfully rectifying that situation is "Piranha 3D," a pitch-perfect, guilty-pleasure serving of late-summer schlock that handily nails the tongue-in-cheek spirit of the Roger Corman original. That 1978 release, a goof on Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" and its spawn, was directed by Joe Dante with a script by John Sayles and would be followed by a lesser James Cameron-directed 1981 sequel of sorts as well as a forgettable 1995 TV redo. But director Alexandre Aja, who worked his remake magic with 2006's atmospheric "The Hills Have Eyes," gets it mainly right, assisted by a lively CG boost and a game cast that really gets into the spirit of things. Boasting a generous R-rated carnal/carnage quotient, the movie deemed too hot for Comic-Con -- nice marketing there, Dimension -- should handily hit its targeted young-male demo. The requisite tone quickly is established during an opening sequence in which the camera zooms in on a drunk guy fishing on a boat. The presumed first victim turns out to be none other than Richard Dreyfuss, in full Matt Hooper "Jaws" garb and reprising "Show Me the Way to Go Home." Cut to typically boisterous spring-break festivities over on the otherwise-sleepy Lake Victoria (played by Lake Havasu, Ariz.), where Jerry O'Connell gleefully piles on the depravity as a Joe Francis-esque video chronicler of any activity involving bikini-clad babes and dependable Elisabeth Shue keeps the peace as the town's no-nonsense sheriff. While she's out investigating the cause of the bloody water, her teenage son (Steven McQueen, grandson of famed tough-guy Steve) is supposed to be keeping an eye on his younger siblings, but O'Connell's offer of a gig as a location scout proves too hard to resist. "Jaws" it ain't -- Aja exhibits little patience for such stuff as dramatic tension and tautly coiled suspense, and there are some undeniable choppy bits -- but he never loses sight of the potential fun factor laid out in Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg's script. Nor does he stint on the gore, with a terrific assist by the veteran effects duo of Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger, who truly outdo themselves with all those nibbled body parts, as well as added bite by creature designer Neville Page. With the key elements in place, the 3D conversion, though decent, really doesn't bring all that much to the party, especially one also attended by Ving Rhames, Adam Scott, pinup Kelly Brook and an irresistibly over-the-top Christopher Lloyd, pulling out all the Doc Brown stops as a wall-eyed marine-life expert. Opens: Friday, Aug. 20 (Dimension) Production: Mark Canton/IPW Prods., Aja/Levasseur Prods. Cast: Elisabeth Shue, Adam Scott, Jerry O'Connell, Kelly Brook, Ving Rhames Director: Alexandre Aja Screenwriters: Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg Executive producers: Bob Weinstein, Harvey Weinstein, Alix Taylor, Louis G. Friedman, J. Todd Harris Producers: Mark Canton, Marc Toberoff Director of photography: John R.
WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama on Friday called ethics charges against Democratic Rep. Charlie Rangel "very troubling" and said he hopes the longtime lawmaker can end his career with dignity. Several House Democrats went further, flat-out urging the New York congressman to resign. "He's somebody who's at the end of his career," Obama said in an interview that aired Friday on "CBS Evening News with Katie Couric." "I'm sure that what he wants is to be able to end his career with dignity. And my hope is that it happens." Obama, speaking on the issue for the first time, praised the 20-term Rangel for serving his constituents well but called the more than one-dozen tax and disclosure charges against him "very troubling." It was hardly an endorsement for the veteran lawmaker, but fell well short of the calls for resignation Rangel received on the eve of the House's August recess. As House Democrats headed home, they wrestled with how to handle the matter in their districts ahead of the midterm elections. Republicans, meanwhile, raced ahead with plans to make Rangel the face of corrupt Washington under the rule of Democrats who had vowed to clean up Congress. For his part, Rangel met with perhaps his staunchest supporters, members of the New York state delegation, in the stately Capitol parlor named for the Ways and Means Committee that he headed until March. "He indicated there was some sloppiness" in his official papers, Rep. Edolphus Towns, D-N.Y., told reporters, "but, you know, there's no criminality here." House rules and credibility — not criminality — were the reasons cited by more than a half dozen House Democrats known to have called for Rangel's resignation by late afternoon Friday. A House panel on Thursday made public for the first time 13 charges of misusing his office and tax and disclosure violations against Rangel, 80, as it opened the trial phase of the ethics proceedings against him. If Rangel and the ethics committee do not settle the case, it goes to a public trial this fall, at the height of an election season in which every member of the House, 36 in the Senate and the Democratic majorities of both chambers are on the line. Either conditionally or outright, Democrats calling for Rangel's resignation included Rep. Walter Minnick of Idaho, Betty Sutton of Ohio, John Yarmuth of Kentucky, Zack Space of Ohio, Ann Kirkpatrick of Arizona and Mary Jo Kilroy of Ohio. "Too many politicians, both Democrats and Republicans, have fallen victim to the idea that they are 'different' than regular folks and nothing could be further from the truth," Kirkpatrick said in a statement. "It is our job as members of Congress to hold each other accountable to a higher standard regardless of party," she added. "If the serious charges against (Rangel) are accurate, he needs to resign." Rangel denies the charges and says the indictment released Thursday contains factual errors. "We've heard Charlie in the Ways and Means Committee, and he's addressed these charges. He never denied they happened. He always has an explanation. You can excuse one or two, but not 13," Yarmuth told the Louisville Courier-Journal in an interview published Friday. "I don't see how he can stay if they're true. I believe they are." Back home in Rangel's Harlem district, he remains revered and could well win reelection if his political career survives the ethics probe. One constituent said Friday she had mixed feelings after reading news accounts of the allegations against him. "I don't think he is 100 percent honest, but he's no worse than other politicians," said Charynda Morez, a college student, who was buying groceries at a deli. She said that she didn't know how he should be punished, but that Rangel should resign anyway. Rangel has four apartments "when there are people who don't have a home," she said, citing allegations that Rangel lived in four combined rent-stabilized apartments instead of one, in violation of New York City law. Democratic leaders are urging their members to cast the election as one about a choice between their party, which under President Barack Obama has overhauled health care and Wall Street, and a GOP-tea party combination that wants to roll back Democratic accomplishments. House Republicans relished using Rangel to change the subject — especially if he does not reach a settlement with the ethics committee. A public trial equates to a free media presentation of the misdeeds of one of the most senior Democrats in the House. The House Republicans' campaign arm released a list of Democrats who have not returned campaign contributions they received from Rangel during their careers and said those lawmakers would face questions about the matter from constituents during the August break. "It's very difficult for Democrats to make the case that this is a 'choice' election when the national headlines are focused around an ethics scandal that has clearly impacted the party in power," said Ken Spain, spokesman for the National Republican Campaign Committee. Rangel retained many supporters Friday. The New York delegation and the Congressional Black Caucus, which was co-founded by Rangel, urged their colleagues not to rush to judgment. House leaders eager to avoid alienating black voters remained mum on what Rangel should do. Some Democrats privately said they took a small measure of comfort in one revelation. Rep. Gene Green, the Texas Democrat who led the four-member bipartisan panel of investigators, told reporters that his committee recommended a relatively mild punishment for Rangel — reprimand, a statement of wrongdoing voted by the whole House that carries no other penalty. But statements continued to trickle out that left no doubt that at some point, Democrats would have to look out for No. 1 - themselves. "If at the trial's conclusion Mr. Rangel is found guilty by his peers, then he should incur the full punishment allowed by the House, including removal from office," said Rep. Bobby Bright, D-Ala. ___ Associated Press writers Larry Margasak and Ben Evans contributed to this report. Follow Yahoo! News on Twitter , become a fan on Facebook
